LONDON (Reuters) - The glamorous gals of *** and the City swept to the top of the box office on the debut of their sequel in Britain with one of the year's biggest opening takes, according to Screen International on Wednesday.
    Entertainment | Film
Critics hated "*** and the City 2," which reunites actresses Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis with director Michael Patrick King.
But British audiences thought otherwise, paying 6.1 million pounds ($8.86 million) to see it on the three days from Friday to Sunday over the holiday weekend.
Last week's chart topper, 3D dance musical "Streetdance," was down in second place while Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley and Gemma Arterton in Disney's "Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time" were down one spot at three.
Director Ridley Scott's take on the legend of Robin Hood slipped a place at four.
Family comedy "The Tooth Fairy" was new at five with the story of a hard-charging, denture-busting hockey player being forced to atone for his sins by becoming a real tooth fairy.
"Iron Man 2," starring Robert Downey Jr as a billionaire with a suit of invincible armor, was down two places at six, just above newcomer "Space Chimps 2: Zartog Strikes Back" at seven.
"The Losers," a tale of U.S. special forces in the Bolivian jungle, made its debut at eight while Nicolas Cage in "Bad Lieutenant" was unchanged at nine.
"Four Lions," a controversial comedic look at a group of British Jihadists and their dreams of glory, was the week's biggest faller, slipping to 10 from six.

Paul Rudd to star in "My Idiot Brother

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Paul Rudd has signed to star as the title character in "My Idiot Brother," a comedy being directed Jesse Peretz.
    Entertainment | Film
Rudd will play an idealist trying to cope with his overbearing mother, who crashes into the homes of his three ambitious sisters and brings, in succession, truth, happiness and a sunny disposition into their lives while also wreaking havoc.
Production is slated to begin in July in New York, with the parts of the sisters to be cast soon. In keeping with the family affair, the script is written by Peretz's sister, Evgenia Peretz, along with David Schisgall.
"Everyone on Earth who has a brother has an idiot brother," Bregman said. "I come from a family of three brothers, so I know that better than anyone. And what could beat the prospect of working with Jesse and Paul, who are like brothers to each other, to bring that message out into the world?"
Peretz, whose directing credits include episodes of Comedy Central's "Important Things With Demetri Martin," worked with Rudd on the 2001 indie comedy "The Chateau."
Rudd next stars opposite Steve Carell in the comedy "Dinner for Schmucks," to be released in July. James Brooks' "How Do You Know," in which Rudd stars opposite Reese Witherspoon, is slated for a December 17 opening.

Actress Sarah Polley who stars in the upcoming movie ''Splice'' poses for a portrait in Hollywood, California May 22, 2010. A few years ago, actress Sarah Polley became a bonafide filmmaker, walking Oscars' red carpet with her 2006 directing debut ''Away From Her,'' which earned her a best adapted screenplay nomination. On Friday, she stars in sci-fi horror thriller ''Splice,'' portraying a scientist in a human engineering experiment run amok. Picture taken May 22, 2010.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A few years ago, actress Sarah Polley became a bonafide filmmaker, walking Oscars' red carpet with her 2006 directing debut "Away From Her," which earned her a best adapted screenplay nomination.
    Entertainment | Film
With that kind of success, one might think the former child star, now 31 years-old, would give up life in front of the camera and take a permanent seat in a director's chair, but Polley has a mind of her own. She wants both.
On Friday, she stars in sci-fi horror thriller "Splice," portraying a scientist in a human engineering experiment run amok. It is her first major movie acting role since the success of low-budget Alzheimer's drama "Away From Her." And working on the film was a chance for Polley to take a break and follow someone else's lead, she said, before returning to directing.
"It was great to abdicate control over everything," she told Reuters in a recent interview.
In "Splice," Polley takes the part of Elsa, who teams with another scientist, played by Adrien Brody, to splice human DNA and create a being that is both human and beast.
Dren possesses some human features but also has hoofs and a tail, and as the movie unfolds, Dren grows other appendages and shows abilities that inevitably lead to big trouble.
The scientists' dream of creating a superhuman being, as represented by Dren, slowly becomes a nightmare and they have to either contain it or kill it.
"The film explores what would happen if science was totally unregulated and two people could go into a back room and do whatever they wanted," Polley said. "Elsa is almost insane with her vision and ambition, and I'm not like that at all. To play someone who is driven like that was fascinating. She's probably the most interesting character I have ever played as a woman."
    CHILD STAR, ACTRESS, DIRECTOR
Polley began acting in her hometown Toronto, Canada, at the tender age of four. She first appeared in Disney film "One Magic Christmas" and quickly moved on to more prominent roles in films like "The Adventures of Baron Munchausen" and the television series "Road to Avonlea."
Throughout her career, she's worked consistently in both Canadian and U.S. films including Atom Egoyan's "The Sweet Hereafter," Doug Liman's "Go" and the 2004 remake of "Dawn of the Dead."
Though women directors have always been few and far between in Hollywood, Polley knew she wanted to eventually direct. At age 21, she had just finished her first short film when she was cast to star in Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow's "The Weight of Water."
"We had a lot of great conversations about what it meant to be a female filmmaker," recalled Polley. "She gave a lot of advice, was hugely supportive and showed such an active interest in my work. She took the idea of mentorship seriously, which was great for me."
Bigelow, of course, won the most recent Academy Award for directing Iraq war movie, "The Hurt Locker," and Polley is no stranger to critical success with "Away From Her," in which a man watches his wife slip away due to Alzheimer's.
While she lost the adapted screenplay Oscar to Joel and Ethan Coen and "No Country for Old Men," Polley made Canadian history when she was the first woman to win a Genie (Canada's equivalent of the Oscars) for directing "Away From Her."
Though she acknowledges, "symbols are always helpful and good for the next generation of female filmmakers," Polley said awards are not something she ever focused on.
"I'm not ambitious in an overall sense, nor do I feel the need to achieve things," she said. "I guess I feel like you can't ultimately control a career, so why try."
    But movies are another matter.
This July, Polley begins shooting her follow-up directorial feature, "Take This Waltz," starring Seth Rogen, Michelle Williams, Sarah Silverman and Luke Kirby. She also wrote the script about what happens when the honeymoon period of a new relationship is over.

Demi Moore set to publish memoir in 2012

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Hollywood actress Demi Moore is all set to go public in a memoir with details of her three marriages and showbusiness career spanning three decades.
    Entertainment | People | Arts | Lifestyle
HarperCollins said on Monday that it had bought world rights to a memoir by the actress that will cover her life and career. The book, as yet unnamed, is scheduled for release in 2012.
Business news website Crain's New York.com quoted unidentified publishing industry executives with knowledge of the deal saying HarperCollins had agreed to pay more than $2 million for the book.
HarperCollins spokeswoman Tina Andreadis declined to comment on the reported price tag.
Moore, 47, has starred in a list of movies including "Ghost," "Indecent Proposal," and "A Few Good Men," as well as some widely-panned films such as "Striptease" and "G.I. Jane."
The actress has in the past acknowledged a troubled upbringing and difficult relationship with her alcoholic mother, Virginia King, who died from a brain tumor in 1998.
Moore was once one the highest paid actresses in Hollywood and in 1991 controversially appeared naked and pregnant on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine.
Moore was married to singer-songwriter Freddy Moore for five years from whom she took her surname before marrying actor Bruce Willis in 1987, a marriage that lasted 13 years and resulted in three daughters, Rumer, Scout and Tallulah.

Charlie Sheen assault plea hits snag, case delayed

    • Charlie Sheen's case postponed

m02ampd20100608ampt2ampi123003636ampw460ampfhampfwampllampplampr2010 06 08T004312Z 01 BTRE657020600 RTROPTP 0 PEOPLE SHEEN POSTPONED Actor Charlie Sheen (R) waves as he leaves the Pitkin County Courthouse with his attorney Richard Cummins after a court hearing in Aspen, Colorado June 7, 2010. Sheen's court hearing for a Christmas Day assault on his wife was postponed on Monday until July. No agreement was reached at the hearing as to the disposition of the case against him as a plea deal did not go through as planned.

ASPEN Colo (Reuters) - A deal that would have wrapped up Charlie Sheen's assault case against his wife in time to resume production on his top-rated television comedy hit a snag on Monday and the case was postponed until July.
    Entertainment | People | Lifestyle
Sheen, 44, the star of CBS's "Two and a Half Men", had been expected to plead guilty at the Aspen court to a reduced charge of misdemeanor assault against Brooke Mueller, and to be sentenced to 30 days behind bars.
The plea bargain would have allowed Sheen to leave jail by day to coach actors at a local Aspen theater, and would have had him finishing his sentence in time to start filming the new series of "Two and a Half Men" in the first week of August.
But the chief prosecutor told Judge James Boyd on Monday that the two sides had been unable to reach an agreement. Boyd rescheduled the hearing until July 12.
Prosecutor Arnold Mordkin declined to give details. "It hit a snag," he told reporters afterward. "I am not going to talk about it."
Sheen's attorney Yale Galanter said the actor was disappointed at the failure to resolve the case. "All parties in good faith put this deal together, but minor glitches developed," Galanter told reporters.
Galanter said the "glitches" were not related to Sheen's work release arrangement at the Aspen theater.
Sheen, the highest-paid actor on U.S. television, left court without speaking to the media. Mueller, who had told police that Sheen pulled a knife and threatened to have her killed during the alcohol-fueled argument on Christmas Day 2009, was not seen in Aspen for Monday's hearing.
The plea deal would have dropped the most serious charges against Sheen, who had faced up to three years behind bars if he had been convicted on all the offenses.
The actor had been widely expected to start his jail term later on Monday. With credit for good behavior, he could have been released early after 17 days.
Sheen and Mueller, the actor's third wife, married in 2008 and have twin, one-year-old sons. Mueller has repeatedly said she wants the case dropped. Both Sheen and Mueller entered rehab earlier this year and attempted a reconciliation but have recently been reported to be living in separate homes.
Sheen's legal troubles have had little effect on his popularity. Audiences for "Two and a Half Men" -- the most popular comedy on U.S. television -- proved steady after his Christmas Day arrest. Sheen last month negotiated a new, two year contract with CBS that took his pay to a reported $1.8 million per episode.
Galanter told reporters he believed there was still time to get the case resolved before filming resumes for the comedy series, in which Sheen plays a womanizing bachelor.
"We are still okay," he said, adding that the July 12 court date could be brought forward if the parties can resolve their differences.
"Sometimes people have the best of interests, but the stars don't align," Galanter said of Monday's failure to conclude the case.

Marvin Isley of Isley Brothers dies at age 56

    M. Tye Comer
    Tue Jun 8, 2010 2:45am EDT

NEW YORK (Billboard) - Marvin Isley, bass player for the Isley Brothers, died in Chicago on Sunday, aged 56. He reportedly succumbed to complications from diabetes, a disease that forced him to retire from performing with the legendary funk band in 1997.
    Entertainment | Music
Marvin joined the Isley Brothers in 1973 after the original lineup -- comprised of older brothers O'Kelly Jr., Rudolph and Ronald -- had scored hits with songs like "Twist and Shout," "It's Your Thing" and "Shout."
The band's first album with Marvin, 1973's "3+3," went platinum. Marvin is credited with bringing a funkier, younger vibe to the group on several songs that have been heavily sampled by hip-hop artists such as Ice Cube and Jim Jones.
The Isley Brothers continued to chart throughout the '70s with songs like "Who's That Lady," "Fight the Power" and "Between the Sheets," many of which were co-written by Marvin and the two younger members, brother Ernie and brother-in-law Chris Jasper. Marvin, Ernie and Jasper split off in 1984 to form Isley-Jasper-Isley, but returned to the fold in 1991.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The "Twilight" stars, Tom Cruise's funky dance moves and a rainstorm of f-bombs could not stop the MTV Movie Awards from suffering a 13 percent drop in viewership, according to data issued on Monday.
    Entertainment | Film | Television
The two-hour ceremony averaged 4.6 million viewers on Sunday, down from 5.3 million for last year's installment, which was the show's biggest audience since 2004.
The "Twilight" sequel "New Moon" nabbed five awards, including best movie. Cruise got dirty on the dance floor with Jennifer Lopez, and few presenters or winners passed up the opportunity to titillate the crowd with naughty epithets

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Marvel is plugging holes all over its "Avengers" franchise.

In its latest casting news, the studio said Monday that Stanley Tucci will play Dr. Abraham Erskine in "Captain America: The First Avenger," which comes out next July. The "Julie & Julia" star joins headliner Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving and Hayley Atwell in the superhero movie.
In the early comics, Erskine was a German scientist behind Project Rebirth, the secret experiment that created the Super Soldier known as Captain America.
Tucci received an Oscar nomination this year for his role in "The Lovely Bones." His next films include the drama "Margin Call," the comedy "Easy A," which hits theaters in September, and the musical "Burlesque," which Screen Gems will open in November.
