Welcome to the current economy, Jennifer Love Hewitt. You've been doing a good job as star of CBS' "Ghost Whisperer" for more than four years, got a real fan following going, and have been keeping your show number one in its timeslot. But, sorry, you're fired.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, CBS has canceled its Friday night drama about an antique-store owner (played by Hewitt) who communicates with the deceased to help them cross over to "the other side." The news is a head-scratcher for many television insiders since the series looked like a shoe-in for renewal given its steady success on Fridays, a traditionally tough night for drawing in viewers. Ironically, CBS is renewing fellow talking-to-dead-people drama "Medium," which the network picked up last year after the series, which stars Patricia Arquette as a suburban mom with psychic powers, was dropped by NBC. Though "Medium" had been edging out "Ghost Whisperer" in the ratings most weeks, the difference in viewership is slight.

CBS is axing five other shows, the majority of which, like "Whisperer," have female leads. Julia-Louis Dreyfus' "New Adventures of Old Christine," "Cold Case," starring Kathryn Morris, and the freshman Jenna Elfman sitcom "Accidentally On Purpose" are all going to TV heaven … but they better not be looking for anyone to help them get there.
