Idol' duets overshadow the solos
Idol' Top 4 Night: It Takes Two To Make A Thing Go Right

For Tuesday night's top four "American Idol" episode, the contestants performed cinema songs under the tutelage of return "Idol" mentor Jamie Foxx, the rare star who's enjoyed huge success both onscreen and on albums. But on the small screen this week, while none of the contestants actually box-office-bombed, a couple didn't quite seem ready for their close-ups. The best moments really came when they costarred, so to speak, joining forces for some show-stopping duets.
Kara DioGuardi declared, "The duets tonight were incredible! They were better than all of the solo performances!" And Simon Cowell concurred that the duo performances were "a million times better" than the solos. They both spoke the truth. The duets were excellent. But does this mean that none of the top four will be able to succeed on their own? This show ain't "Can You Duet?," you know. It's a search for a SOLO superstar. The fact that the finalists were so much stronger in pairs may not bode well for these singers' post-"Idol" solo careers, I fear.
Anyway, here's who got two thumbs up and two thumbs down, when the top four went to the movies:
SOLOS
Lee DeWyze - Lee has recently solidly established himself as the Season 9 man to beat, but after a couple of standout weeks, he kind of copped out this Tuesday with a safe, ho-hum choice: Seal's "Kiss From a Rose" from Batman Returns, a clichéd ballad already performed on "American Idol" by Danny Gokey, Chris Sligh, and, um, Jack Black on "Idol Gives Back." Lee's version certain was superior to all of those, but it was hardly his best work: It was vocally rough in patches and never quite gained momentum. Randy Jackson was unimpressed, grumbling, "You did nothing with that song. It was just okay." I agreed with Randy, but Randy's alternative suggestion--Bon Jovi's "Blaze of Glory" from Young Guns II--was puzzling. (I would have preferred something like Simple Minds' Breakfast Club anthem "Don't You Forget About Me," but then again, that's all part of my pipe dream of a John Hughes Night on "Idol.") Ryan Seacrest's later announcement that Bon Jovi will actually be performing on Wednesday's results show revealed the possible cross-promotional agenda behind Randy's odd suggestion. But I digress. Anyway, Simon was also displeased with Lee's performance, saying it "verged on karaoke"--an insult he has lobbed at countless contestants, but never at Lee. Ouch. If it hadn't been for Lee's totally redeeming duet with Crystal Bowersox (more on that in a bit), I might have thought Lee had blown his chance of making it to the finale.
Michael Lynche - When I heard that Michael Lynche was taking on Michael Jackson, I immediately assumed he'd be singing "Ben"--or perhaps the sadly prophetically titled "You Can't Win" from The Wiz. But oh, no--he did "Will You Be There?" from Free Willy. It was a good song choice for him--as Ellen DeGeneres pointed out, you can't really go wrong with a gospel choir behind you--and he performed it with his usual bluster and bravado. But, as Ellen also pointed out, it was predictable. And it launched an unfortunate and awkward conversation about "Willys" between Simon, who'd never seen the movie, and Kara, who seemed all too eager to discuss the subject. Michael tried to explain to Simon that the film was "about a whale that needs saving," but that only seemed to confuse Simon more. Simon only offered a bit of faint praise: "At least you gave it 100 percent, and I kind of felt like you meant it." Well, at least that's more than Lee got.
Casey James - Casey is a genius. He knows that he has the desperate-housewife demographic in his corner, and his biggest supporter on the show is Kara, a woman 12 years his senior. So it can't be a coincidence that he chose the ultimate ode to older women, Simon & Garfunkel's "Mrs. Robinson" from The Graduate. Yep, like I said, he's a genius. I actually dug what Randy called Casey's "cool and laid-back" version: He was seated, "'68 Comeback"-style, on a circular floor with fans clapping around him; he played mandolin, which was neato; and his long, floppy hair and gruff, grungy voice reminded me a bit of the Lemonheads' mid-'90s cover of the tune. But the judges (other than Kara, of course) weren't all that thrilled. Simon called Casey's rendition "lazy" and said, "I didn't think the song had the substance required on this important night for you; I think you could have made a little more of an impact." As for the rest of the judges, they squandered their critique time by mercilessly teasing Kara, the assumed titular character to whom Casey's May/December performance was dedicated. And everything just kind of unraveled from there.
Crystal Bowersox - Crystal, once a shoo-in this season, has disappointed over the past two weeks. But after this week, I say she deserves to win this entire competition just for being awesome enough to cover a song from Caddyshack. Caddyshack! She could have gone the conventional route and done an acoustic version of a popular movie ballad, like "Wind Beneath My Wings" or "My Heart Will Go On," but instead she covered Kenny Loggins' "I'm Alright." And it was more than just all right--as Kara and Ellen attested, it was better than the original. Said Simon, "You're back in the game." She's all right, nobody worry about her. Crystal will be just fine.
DUETS
Lee & Crystal - The two contestants whom everyone already assumes will be onstage together at the May 26 finale foreshadowingly came together for a duet of the Swell Season's Once theme, "Falling Slowly," a ballad already squarely placed on the "Idol" map last season by future champ Kris Allen's game-changing, star-making version. I still prefer Kris's more stripped-down rendition, but I fell slowly for Crystal and her "musical crush" Lee as their voices and guitar playing melded together beautifully. They worked really well as a duo, almost to the point where I wished there'd be a tie on finale night, and they'd be contractually obligated to record an all-duets joint album. (Like I said in this post's intro, these contestants are stronger in pairs.) My one complaint about this performance? It would've been nice if the camera could have stopped moving for, like, five seconds and just focused on the couple. The apparently ADD-afflicted camera crew's aerial-crane swooping practically gave me motion sickness. The judges, however, had no complaints. "You're like the new Captain & Tennille!" raved Ellen, in what I assume was meant as high praise. "One of my favorite moments of the entire season," exclaimed Kara. I think this performance just might have sealed the deal for both contestants.
Casey & Michael - At first, when I heard that these two would be forced to co-croon Bryan Adams' schmaltzy love ballad "Have You Ever Loved a Woman?" from Don Juan DeMarco, the conspiracy theorist in me thought it was the producers' ploy to get Casey and/or Big Mike eliminated, in order to clear a path to the finale for the obviously favored Crystal and Lee. After all, Casey and Michael clearly got the worse song, and guys singing love ballads together is always a little weird (see: Air Supply). But you know what? Their double-guitar duet was a pleasant surprise. They pulled it off. "Brilliant! Nice one, nice one!" exclaimed Randy. This song also gave Ellen the opportunity to deliver her best zinger of the season: "As a matter of fact, yes, I have loved a woman!" Nice one, Ellen, nice one.
So, now it is prediction time. I think it's pretty obvious that, barring some total Daughtry-style voting fluke, Lee and Crystal will be safe. So who will go, Casey or Michael? Michael gave the bigger, bolder, arguably better performance, but he's been in the bottom more times than Casey (and would already be off the show if not for the Judges' Save). Meanwhile, Casey managed to emerge from his Sinatra Night debacle unscathed (not even landing in the bottom two); plus his shrewd song choice might have given him an edge this week. So I'm going to guess that Big Mike will get a big sendoff on Wednesday. Tune in then to see if I'm right
