Bill Condon On 'Breaking Dawn': 'There Won't Be Any Musical Numbers


Spoiler! Fans hoping to see Edward and Bella break into song and dance in "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" are going to be disappointed.
"There won't be any musical numbers," newly named director Bill Condon, whose last film was the Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson-starring "Dreamgirls," said of the upcoming fourth "Twilight Saga" film in a note posted on Facebook.

Like previous directors Chris Weitz and David Slade, the director introduced himself to "Twilight" diehards with an online letter, reassuring them that he's "bringing myself up to speed" on the beloved vampire series.
"I've read BREAKING DAWN twice, rewatched Catherine's and Chris's movies 2-3 times each, have all four CDs playing in my car, and have Catherine's notebook, Mark Cotta Vaz's companion books, and even Volume 1 of the graphic novel here on my desk," he wrote. "A corner of my office is starting to look like Hot Topic."

The "Gods and Monsters" and "Candyman: Farewell To The Flesh" director added that he's "been yearning for a return to a story with Gothic overtones."
"Like many of you, I've always been slightly obsessed with vampires, dating back to the prime-time series DARK SHADOWS, which I followed avidly as a kid," he said, adding, however, that it took a special project to get him to return to the horror world.
"Rooted in a beautiful, real landscape with a great sense of place, Bella, Edward, Jacob, and the rest of the Forks/La Push menagerie, experience emotions that are primal, and universal: desire, despair, jealousy," he wrote. "And it all comes to fruition in BREAKING DAWN. This is a final chapter in the best sense; not just wide in scope and scale, but emotionally charged and intense throughout."

Condon concluded his letter by asking for questions in the comments section, which sparked over 2,000 responses. However, he did not comment on long-standing rumors that the plot-heavy "Breaking Dawn" will arrive as two films.
"The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," the third film in the series, directed by Chris Weitz, is due June 30.

Shakira's World Cup anthem hits sour note


With all the problems facing this summer's World Cup in South Africa, the last thing it needed was trouble over something as silly as the tournament's official anthem, but that's exactly what Shakira's "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" is causing among South Africans and many others who have endured it.
The song hit radio stations last week, with Johannesburg locals responding with comments like "It's horrible" and "How is Shakira going to sing the African part of it?" (My guess is with her voice, but a Speak & Spell could be a fun choice, too.)
The Colombian singer collaborated with South African band Freshlyground on the track, which borrows from a Cameroonian song called "Zangalewa." But the fact that the anthem for South Africa's World Cup is not being sung by a South African is the sticking point for the critics who aren't just opposed to the new tune itself.
This isn't even the first time this World Cup's organizers have been given headaches over their musical selection, though. The tournament's kickoff concert that will take place the night before matches begin on June 11 was also criticized for featuring too many foreign acts like the Black Eyed Peas, Alicia Keys and John Legend and not local musicians. The organizing committee eventually bowed to the complaints and made the lineup more "representative."
Shakira is scheduled to perform "Waka Waka" with Freshlyground in front of 94,000 people at the final match on July 11. That should be interesting. Even more interesting? The actual tournament.

Carey renews vows with huge 'toy' ring

When Mariah Carey and her husband Nick Cannon said "I do" to each other for the third time at their Beverly Hills home on Friday, Cannon, 29, presented his wife of two years with an unusual piece of bling: a huge, diamond- and sapphire-encrusted bauble designed to look like a high-end, thoroughly inedible version of the classic children's "ring pop" candy.
In a video touting the ring's designer, Jason of Beverly Hills, Cannon, 29, explains that the expensive gift is also something of a joke: "This is for fun," he tells the camera, displaying the candy-colored ring in its special box.
"This is what we do for toys. At some point you've gotta have a sense of humor about all of this. A sense of humor with diamonds."

Redgrave acting dynasty draws interest



Lynn Redgrave, the twice-Oscar-nominated actor, died on Sunday at the age of 67. A well-known member of the Redgrave acting dynasty, Ms. Redgrave had been receiving treatment for ****** cancer. Her publicist said that she passed away in her sleep, surrounded by family and close friends.
In a statement released to the media, the Redgrave family said this about the departed Lynn: "Our beloved mother Lynn Rachel passed away peacefully after a seven year journey with ****** cancer. She lived, loved and worked harder than ever before. The endless memories she created as a mother, grandmother, writer, actor and friend will sustain us for the rest of our lives."
Immediately following the news of her death, Web searches soared on Ms. Redgrave, as well as several people in her family tree. The Redgraves' imprint on the craft of acting spans generations. Here's a brief recap of some of the family's most famous members.

Lynn Redgrave: In 1998, she was nominated for an Academy Award for her work in "Gods and Monsters," costarring Sir Ian McKellen. Ms. Redgrave first reached fame in the 1960s, when she appeared in the controversial film "Georgy Girl" (it also earned her an Oscar nod). But she didn't limit herself to Hollywood films. She was also a constant presence on the stage, receiving three Tony nominations during her storied career.

Vanessa Redgrave: After word of Lynn's death hit the Web, online lookups for her older sister, Vanessa, spiked immediately. Vanessa, arguably more famous than her sister, has acted in dozens of major movies, including the first "Mission: Impossible" and the soon-to-be-released "Letters to Juliet," costarring Amanda Seyfried. Vanessa was nominated for an Oscar in 1967, the same year as her sister. Both sisters lost to Elizabeth Taylor, who took home the Oscar for her work in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"
Natasha Richardson: Ms. Richardson, who was niece to Lynn and daughter to Vanessa, died last year after a skiing accident. Much like her mother and aunt, Natasha was hugely respected and appeared in numerous films and stage productions during her career. Following the news of Lynn's death, there was renewed Search interest in "natasha richardson accident," as well as her widower, Liam Neeson.

Michael Redgrave: The father of Lynn, Vanessa, and Corin (also a prolific actor) and grandfather to Natasha Richardson, Joely Richardson, and Jemma Redgrave died in 1985. Michael Redgrave was awarded the Knight Bachelor of the Order of the British Empire in 1959 for his contributions to acting. His father, Roy Redgrave, was also an actor, albeit of silent films.
So, to summarize the Redgrave family business...Roy Redgrave was a legendary silent film star whose son, Michael Redgrave, a revered actor from Britain, was father to Lynn, Vanessa, and Corin Redgrave, who died last month. The threesome starred in numerous films and stage productions, and Vanessa continues to act alongside Hollywood's hottest stars. Vanessa's daughter, Natasha, was also a respected actor. Natasha's sister, Joely, can be see on Showtime's "The Tudors."

Martha Stewart's modeling past

Multi-tasking TV host, author, magazine editor, home decorator... and model. Is there anything Martha Stewart can't do? Photos of a young Stewart glamming up the pages of fashion magazines surfaced recently, adding yet another hash mark to the Domestic Diva's very long list of careers.
Martha's modeling moment. Courtesy Tory Burch Fashion designer Tory Burch uncovered Stewart's high-fashion past on a trip to the home-decor maven's studio. Tory stumbled across a wall of photos picturing a beautiful, fresh-faced Martha hawking sundresses and Rolex watches.

Stewart's modeling career spanned the early part of the 1960s. She appeared in places like Ms. Magazine and Glamour, and spent a summer as the face of Chanel.
Martha took on a range of looks, playing a sophisticated Wall Street banker, a cheerful sailor, and a Brigitte-Bardot-esque vixen with a head full of hair extensions.
Vogue editor Andre Leon Talley appeared on "Martha" Friday to talk about Stewart's fashion career. Talley received the tip-off about Stewart's glamour-girl past from designer Karl Lagerfeld and swiftly shared the news: "I tweeted-I said, 'Did you know that Martha Stewart was once a Chanel model in the days of Coco?' And people were fascinated."
Martha revealed that she still owns some of the clothing used in the photo shoots -- though it doesn't all fit. "I was like 116 pounds!" she explained to Talley, who assured his host she still looks great.

Stewart reminisced on her modeling career with trendsetter Burch (you know those ubiquitous ballet flats with a gold medallion on each toe box? that's her!), explaining that she was married and in school while working as a model. "I met all these great photographers and it paid my way through Barnard College," Stewart said. "At the same time as all of this I was in college. We did it all. Women today seem to have a harder time trying to do all that at once."

Dancing With the Stars' heats up

Evan Lysacek battled back from the middle of the pack to challenge Nicole Scherzinger for frontrunner status on Monday's "Dancing with the Stars."
The men's figure skating gold medalist asked his professional partner, Anna Trebunskaya, to push him in rehearsals in the last few days and the ballroom result was a sharp, dramatic and intense Argentine tango that left the judges stunned.

"Evan Lysacek has the eye of the tiger," judge Carrie Ann Inaba raved after Evan and his partner performed, but it was British judge Len Goodman who was the most moved of the panel.
"I knew you were nice on ice, but I had my doubts that you were gonna be good on wood," Len said. "But, I tell you, I've got a [score] paddle in here that I haven't used yet. I'm gonna dust it off, because that was fantastic."

The paddle Len referred to was the perfect 10, and added to the 10s from Carrie Ann and Bruno Tonioli, Evan and Anna end up with Season 10's first perfect score - 30 out of 30.
While she didn't net a perfect score with her partner, Derek Hough, Nicole did manage to move the audience, and her beloved aunt who watched from the audience, with an elegant waltz to "You Light Up My Life."
"You are, by far, the best dancer we've ever had on this show," Carrie Ann said. "You're so good that you almost dance as Derek's equal."

Carrie Ann said, however, that Nicole didn't do enough to be 'like one' with her partner, a unison style of movement the waltz needed, resulting in 9s from the judges for a total of 27 out of 30.
Round 2 of the competition, however, helped even out the playing field between Evan and Nicole.

Nicole danced as part of Team Gaga, as in Lady, cha cha cha-ing to "Telephone," alongside Chad Ochocinco and his partner Cheryl Burke, and Pamela Anderson with her pro, Damian Whitewood. The ***tet managed to impress the judges enough to add an extra 27 points to each of their pair dance totals.
The other three competitor pairs - Evan and Anna, Erin Andrews and Maksim Chmerkovskiy, and Niecy Nash with Louis van Amstel - cha cha cha-ed to "Holiday" as part of Team Madonna, but only managed to pick up an additional 24 points.
The team round results, added to their pair dance scores, left Nicole and Evan tied, setting up a real toe-to-toe competition between the stars.
Meanwhile, Bengals receiver Chad and partner Cheryl finished the night in third with 52 points, while Pamela and Damian tied Erin and Maks for fourth, each scoring 51 points.
Niecy and Louis landed in the bottom spot with 49 points out of a possible 60.

Country music star Chely Wright comes out



Chely Wright has done lots of important things in her career: Released seven albums, charted numerous hits (including 1999's No. 1 "Single White Female"), started a charitable foundation for music education, and written songs for other artists such as Brad Paisley and Clay Walker.
However, her latest personal accomplishment just may be her most momentous to date. The 39-year-old singer revealed this morning that she is ***, making her the first major country star to come out publicly.
In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Wright explains why she was reluctant to discuss her ***ual orientation for so long. "There had never, ever been a country music artist who had acknowledged his or her homo***uality," she said. "I wasn't going to be the first."
However, "Nothing in my life has been more magical than the moment I decided to come out," she says.
Wright, a small-town girl who grew up in a musical family and released her debut album in 1994, says she's directed her whole life around the dream of making music. Given the conservative bent of the country music world, she decided to put her career ahead of her personal life. "I hid everything for my music," she explained.
Wright will appear on NBC's Today Show Wednesday (May 5). She is also releasing her memoir, Like Me, as well as her first album in five years, Lifted Off The Ground, this week.
So far, Nashville at large has been quiet regarding Wright's announcement (to be fair--the city is in an emergency situation, experiencing record flooding), but my guess is they will be largely supportive. Despite not releasing new music for several years, Wright's been active in the community with her charitable Reading, Writing & Rhythm Foundation, which benefits music education in public schools.
It's another guess how country fans themselves will respond to Wright's announcement. Inevitable speculation is that a largely conservative group will be disapproving--which, in country music, can spell crippling disaster to a artist's career.
However, I'm not so sure criticism will come solely from her ***ual orientation. Coming out after an absence from the music scene, right before the release of a new album, will undoubtedly smack of opportunism to some fans. We'll see this week what Wright has to say, and I'm very interested in reading her autobiography as well as hearing new music after so long.

Walk of Fame problem for 'Seinfeld' star

Julia Louis-Dreyfus received the honor of a lifetime on Tuesday, when her name was forever emblazoned on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Just one problem - her name on her star was misspelled.

According to CNN producer David Daniel, who snapped a photo of the typo on his way in to work before it was fixed for her ceremony, the star that was laid into cement read "Julia Luis Dreyfus" - missing the "O" in Louis and the hyphen.
"I snapped a pic with my BlackBerry, then hustled to work and called Ana Martinez, the press rep for the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 'Are you sure?' she gasped, and then, understandably, she hurried off the phone," Daniel wrote in his post Tuesday afternoon on CNN's The Marquee Blog.

With the ceremony just mere hours away - "and you can't just print up a new star at the local CopyMart," Daniel noted - how did the Walk of Fame folks quickly fix the error?
Workers quickly printed up a new section with the correct spelling of "Louis," carved the misspelled name out of the star and swapped out the piece with the typo.
As it turns out, when the former "Seinfeld" and current "The New Adventures of Old Christine" actress heard about the mishap - she thought it was hilarious.

"It turns out Louis-Dreyfus thought the mistake was hysterical, and wanted them to leave it, but they'd already chiseled out the 'Luis' and put a temporary 'Louis-' in its place for the unveiling," Daniel noted.
So what did they do with the piece of the star with the misspelled name?

"They're going to give [it] to Julia as a memento," he concluded, citing his Walk of Fame rep.
However, this isn't the first time this has happened. A spokesperson for the Walk of Fame committee told Access Hollywood a similar situation happened when comedian Dick Van Dyke was enshrined as well. No word on what the typo was.

Early 'Iron Man 2' release backfires



The highly anticipated "Iron Man 2" rumbles into U.S. theaters this weekend. This really isn't big news to the rest of the world, considering that moviegoers pretty much everywhere except in the U.S. have already seen the film. Though, actually, thanks to movie piracy, some of the United States has seen it, too.

In a rare move, Paramount released "Iron Man 2" overseas first, to try to take advantage of another weekend of possible box-office receipts before the start of the World Cup, which kicks off on June 11. The World Cup, held only once every four years, is expected to capture the attention of most of the world. Conversely, the World Cup garners relatively minor curiosity in the U.S., so studios didn't seem scared off from sticking with the movie's original stateside release date of May 7. (Only Japan, where "Iron Man 2" is to be released on June 11, has a later release date than the States.)

But all this fancy release-date footwork has backfired for "Iron Man 2": It's served to open a window for movie pirates to get their hands on it. Some overseas markets have pretty relaxed security when it comes to pirating movies with a video recording device (not to say the U.S. doesn't have the same problem). And in this case, there's an entire U.S. and Canadian market that has yet to see this highly anticipated film.

Considering "Iron Man 2" is an effects-laden affair, most moviegoers are going to want to see the film at the theater, regardless. And judging by the $100.2 million the movie took in during its first overseas weekend, the bootlegging may ultimately not have much of an effect at all.

Box-office takes notwithstanding, this brings up an interesting point about the use of 3D in films: "Iron Man 2" is not in 3D, so the piracy issue with the film might be more of a concern, as there's no way to pirate a film shown in 3D (the 2D version is used when pirating). And considering how complicated it is to reproduce 3D using less-than-sophisticated bootlegging machinery, if "Iron Man 2" were in 3D, audiences would have another reason to skip the temptation of a pirated copy and pay the extra fee to see it with the theater experience.

Piracy aside, when asked if they left money on the table by not shooting the film in 3D, director Jon Favreau told Entertainment Weekly, "Yeah, whether we think it or not, we have."
