Critics hated "*** and the City 2," which reunites actresses Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis with director Michael Patrick King.
But British audiences thought otherwise, paying 6.1 million pounds ($8.86 million) to see it on the three days from Friday to Sunday over the holiday weekend.
Last week's chart topper, 3D dance musical "Streetdance," was down in second place while Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley and Gemma Arterton in Disney's "Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time" were down one spot at three.
Director Ridley Scott's take on the legend of Robin Hood slipped a place at four.
Family comedy "The Tooth Fairy" was new at five with the story of a hard-charging, denture-busting hockey player being forced to atone for his sins by becoming a real tooth fairy.
"Iron Man 2," starring Robert Downey Jr as a billionaire with a suit of invincible armor, was down two places at six, just above newcomer "Space Chimps 2: Zartog Strikes Back" at seven.
"The Losers," a tale of U.S. special forces in the Bolivian jungle, made its debut at eight while Nicolas Cage in "Bad Lieutenant" was unchanged at nine.
"Four Lions," a controversial comedic look at a group of British Jihadists and their dreams of glory, was the week's biggest faller, slipping to 10 from six.
